New homes are built with what we call builder’s grade lumber, which basically means poor quality ply wood. These staircases are inevitably covered in carpet. You have a few options if the carpet look is not what you want. There are hardwood veneer inserts, which slip over top of the plywood builders grade step. This is a simple solution. The second step involves removing the staircase and installing the new one of the solid wood of your choice.
